Beaufort County Council will be voting on the upcoming School Budget to take effect in 2010. On June 3rd in Beaufort and June 4th on Hilton Head Island, residents and non residents will have a chance to voice their opinion on the budget. Here is what the school district is voting on:
The School District was given 4 directives by the Board going into the budget debate:
1. Initial proposed budget should reflect a zero net increase in millage rate for operations and debt reduction unless prevented by Federal/State mandates.
2. Review closure or contraction of existing schools.
3. Accelerate listing and sale of real estate.
4. Maintain existing excellent bond rating.
This Option 1 would cause a 6.6 mill increase next year to 6%ers and a like decrease to 4%ers from debt reduction, only to return the next year 2011 with a 5.5 increase to 6%ers and the 6.6 increase to 4%ers. A move that could further hurt home sales for second home owners, investors, and commercial owners of real estate in Hilton Head Island, Bluffton, and all of Beaufort County.
